- Support H.R. 1523, the Respect State Marijuana Laws Act -

On April 12, 2013, H.R. 1523 was introduced by three Republicans (Reps. Rohrabacher, Justin Amash (R-MI), and Don Young (R-AK)) and three Democrats (Reps. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR), Steve Cohen (D-TN) and Jared Polis (D-CO)).  This bill strictly focuses on the right of states to adopt policies on marijuana regulation that are acceptable to their citizens.  It will simply create an exemption in the Controlled Substances Act for anyone acting in compliance with state marijuana laws.  Therefore, if an individual is following state law, he or she will not be prosecuted and imprisoned by the federal government.

Marijuana prohibition laws have lost popular support among the American people.  In March 2013, a Pew survey found 52 percent of Americans in favor of making marijuana legal, including 60 percent of independents. Support is up 12 percent in just the last three years.  Moreover, when people were asked whether federal laws should be enforced in states where marijuana is now legal, 60 percent of all respondents said they shouldn't be.

Our federal government should not be wasting billions of dollars annually intruding on states that reform their marijuana prohibition laws in a manner that is acceptable to their citizens.
